Maharashtra: Dhule riots death toll rises to 5, curfew continues

Dhule(Maharashtra): Another injured succumbed to his injuries in community-sensitive Dhule, taking riot death toll to five on Tuesday. The police confirming the incident said that the unnamed victim admitted to hospital, died around 6.30 am.

Three persons were killed in police firing in the riots that took place in Dhule around 350 km from Mumbai. Meanwhile, curfew continued in city on third day also.

More than 400 people, 200 policemen among them, were injured in the riots that ripped through the town. Currently, over 100 people are undergoing medical treatment at hospital.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan has ordered a magisterial probe into the violence. The report will be submitted within two months time. To take stock of situation, Maharashtra Additional Director General of Police Ahmad Javed is expected to visit Dhule.

Riots-injured included 11 police officers, 102 policemen and 100 civilians.

The riots reportedly broke out over a trivial issue of payment of a restaurant bill. The ensuing arguments and fisticuffs led to full-scale violence in the vicinity of Machhi Bazaar Chowk and surrounding areas of Pala Bazaar and Madhavpura.

Policemen who rushed to the spot came under heavy attack, with rioters hurling stones, bricks, acid and soda water bottles at them. Arson, stoning of vehicles, and attacks on homes and shops followed. Police used batons and tear gas, and then opened fire.

Chavan making announcement said that the government would pay for the treatment of the injured and will bear the funeral expenses of those killed in police firing.
