New York: Top Indian Squash player Dipika Pallikal cleared the first obstacle in WSA (Women's Squash Association) Carol Weymuller Open Gold 50 event in California, by beating Pakistan's Maria Toor Pakay to qualify for the main draw.
Though, Dipika has been ranked 15 in world squash ranking, she has defeated her Pakistan opponent in straight sets 11-8, 11-5 and 11-3, on Tuesday. The opponent is on 52nd rank in world ranking.
Dipika will be taking on United States' Latasha Khan, who has been ranked 18 in world ranking, on Wednesday. The match will held for a place in the main draw of the $50, 000 tournament.
Latasha edged out Egypt's Kanzy El Dafrawy 8-11, 11-8, 14-12, 7-11 and 11-8 in another qualifying match.
"I played Maria all my junior days and we always had close matches. Today, I tried twisting her and putting in cross courts and keeping her off her feet. It worked and she making errors at crucial points also helped," 21-years-old, Dipika said.
The competition field includes world's top five players, including number one Nicol David of Malaysia.
