Reportedly, the subway was dug by 14 men using their utensils. These men have been charged of 2008 serial blasts in the city.
The tunnel was being dug for past 6 months everyday when the inmates were allowed to work in the garden near their cell. The prisoners utilized this time in excavating an escape route. Officials have also said that a few of the charged men are civil engineers.
The men who allegedly dug the tunnel are kept in Barrack No 4. Because of the serious charges against the prisoners in this section of the jail, surveillance is meant to be expansive and constant.
As of now, an enquiry has been ordered into the matter to find out if the security guards were involved in the act.
The jail has about 3700 inmates, which is 900 more than its capacity.
