Hyderabad: The 43rd international Film Festival of India will not be featuring any Telugu film this time. Even in non-feature films category there is no Telugu film. The festival is starting next week in Goa.
Regional films in Malayalam, Kannada and Tamil will be featured in its Indian Panorama section where best films are shown to international audiences.
Five Malyalam movies have found their places in this section. Moreover, Bhojpuri, Byari, Bengali, Hindi/ Marathi, Assamese, Bhojpuri, Byari, Hindi/English, Konkani and Punjabi have also fulfilled the criteria.
According to reports, 9 entries were received in Telugu and four managed to qualify to Central committee. The committee gave nod to 18 films from different languages. The movies include Ela Aithe Ela, Maa Voori Jogini, Mallela Theernam and Minugurulu. Apart from these other films like Oka Romantic Crime Katha, Omkaram, Prathyayanam and Veerangam were seen by sub jury group and were rejected.
The nine-member committee selected the films will be bringing Indian cinema recognition in front of international audience and went for more than one also.
PK Manvi, academic, producer and director hailing from Hyderabad was part of jury which included members from Chennai, Mumbai, Delhi, Trivendrum. Manvi is the dean of Ramoji Academy of Film and Television citing the reason behind their non-inclusion said that some of the films had a routine theme, the others either lacked the technical quality to make the grade. The films from other languages were simply better in many aspects he added.
Expressing his optimism he said, “There should have been more entries of Telugu films. Some big films like ‘Eega’ were not even sent to be considered for selection to be screened in the Indian panorama section.” Last year also only one Telugu film Virodhi, starring Srikanth was selected for the Indian panorama.
