California: Google yet again surprised all with its latest doodle. In honor of Gideon Sundback, popularly called as zipperman, a zip runs down the Google homepage to mark his 132nd birthday and remember his participation in the important invention of ‘zip’ or ‘zipper’.
April 24 is celebrated as Gideon Sundback’s birthday. He was a Swedish Electrical Engineer born in 1880. He studies in Sweden and Germany, then later moved to US in 1905 after giving engineer’s exam in 1903. In 1906, he was hired at Universal Fastner Company, New Jersey where he was later promoted to the post of Head Designer in the company in 1909.
He not only perfected the fastner which the company was developing from the past 20 years but also built a machine which manufactured zipper. His invention was one of those things which have revolutionized the way we live and without which…well, imagine life without zipper by striking it out of things that use it.
