Great Wall of China not doing great, portion collapses due to heavy rains

Beijing: Due to incessant rains, a portion of Great Wall of China collapsed. As per the reports, the repair work was underway on the collapsed section in Hebei province's Zhangjiakou region.

The Dajingmen section, stretching about 36 metres long, collapsed on Monday due to heavy rains and winds, an official said. Cracks were also spotted on the wall near the site. The ancient wall could not bear strong water currents.

The section was built during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). It has endured years of erosion, which also contributed to the collapse, experts said.

The Great Wall is actually made up of portions of many walls which stretch about 4,000 miles, east to west across northern borders of China.

Recent rains have caused widespread flooding in the country.
