WED came into being during a conference on Human Environment in Stockholm held from 15th to 16th June in 1972. It is one of the very important means to spread awareness on environment and teach people about the effects of deteriorating environmental conditions. The day also encourages people to take effective measures to save our ecosystem.
The UNEP (United Nation Environment Programme) says that Green Economy is one that facilitates both human being and environment to grow together. It results in human well-being and reduces the environmental threats at the same time.
To sum up, Green Economy reduces the carbon emissions, and pollutants, it also increases resource efficiency and maintains biodiversity.
The Rio+20 Earth Summit is going to be the largest and one of the most important gatherings in the history of environment. The conference is to be held in Brazil later this month and more than 130 world heads of state are expected to attend the meeting. This Environment Day will also mark the completion of 20 years of the first Earth Summit, which was held in 1992.
The irony of the fact is that, in spite of so many efforts and awareness programmes, the condition is becoming worse day by day. Its high time to ignore these wake up calls and we must actually switch to more ecofriendly means.
