Indira Gandhi, assasin Beant Singh remembered on 28th death anniversary

New Delhi: As the nation pays homage to former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on her 28th death anniversary, Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (Amritsar) held an akhand path and bhoj in the memory of one of her assassins Beant Singh.

Beant along with Satwant Singh, who also happened to be Indira's bodyguards, assassinated her on October 31, 1984 at the her residence. Beant was shot dead on that very moment, while Satwant was hanged till death on January 6, 1989.

While Beant's kins were indulged in the commemoration, Golden Temple's senior officials stayed aloof from the program.

Moving back to Delhi, Indian leaders including Gandhi's family paid floral tribute to the prominent leader on Shakti Sthal. President Pranab Mukherjee, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Vice President Hamid Ansari, Congress chief Sonia Gandhi along with son Rahul Gandhi and Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar were present at the occasion.

Lt Governor Tejinder Khanna, Salman Khurshid, Union Ministers Sushilkumar Shinde, M Veerappa Moily, PK Bansal, Kamal Nath, Narayana Swamy, Deepa Dasmunsi and Chiranjeevi were amongst the others present at the samadhi.

The ambiance took people back in time as a speech by Indira Gandhi was played. Operation Blue Star launched by Gandhi to suppress the secessionist movement in Punjab was apparently the main cause of her murder.
