Javed Akhtar confesses alcohol addiction on Satyamev Jayate

Mumbai: It was the ninth episode of Aamir's television show Satyamev Jayate which dealt with the concept of alcoholism amongst Indians, especially the youth. The show elaborated that how its consumption is misunderstood with being trendy which later becomes inevitable. The episode covered all the heads from hazards of drinking to talking to some eminent personalities who were earlier alcohol addicts.

The first to speak on the show was Vijay Simha, a renowned journalist. He narrated his bumpy ride as an alcoholic and said that his addiction ultimately landed him on the streets of Delhi with no food for nine months. His parents refused to support him out of disgust and anger. He still regrets that his mother didn't forgive him.

Lakshman, a 64 year man agreed that he ruined 40 years of his life just drinking. He also said that it was Alcoholics Anonymous group that made him realize that he has been ill-treating his family and himself throughout these years.

Reputed lyricist Javed Akhtar's confession on the show was an element of surprise. He candidly discussed his obsession for alcohol and felt that 27 years of his life were spoilt because of his bad habit. He said that people who drink are gadhas (donkeys) and drinking obviously is a ghinona (disgusting) deed. He also said that people tend to fall for alcohol because of glamour myth associated to it.

Aamir cited several examples where innocent people died because of the deeds of drinkers. He also requested the government to implement strict laws against drinking and driving.

The episode was worth watching for all the Indian youth who get addicted to alcohol just for the sake of being trendy and fashionable.
