Manesar Scuffle: 88 workers arrested | Maruti shuts plant

New Delhi: The Gurgaon police detained 88 workers for getting engaged into a brawl with the managerial staff in Maruti Suzuki's Manesar plant on Wednesday. The clash left behind one person dead whereas several others were injured.

Mr Maheshwar Dayal, DCP, Gurgaon East, has confirmed that the person who died is Mr Avnish Kumar Deb, DGM, HR (as confirmed by his brother-in-law).

Over 1,000 policemen have now been deployed at the factory and work has been suspended indefinitely.

Earlier, the labour unrest followed the suspension of a worker by the company. Union leaders accused Maruti of taking action against workers "without any reason". The company said the union prevented officials from taking action against the worker who beat up a supervisor on the shop floor.

A case under sections of murder, attempt to murder and damage to properties has been registered against the workers, said SHO Manesar.

Company officials informed that about 100 men have been admitted across four hospitals - Artemis, Medanta, Paras and Columbia Asia.

Meanwhile, nine policemen were also injured in the scuffle.

The fire burnt down Gate No. 2 at the factory and the first floor of the building at the front which housed the HR office and a conference room.

Mr Ranjit Dalal, DGP, Haryana reportedly said, "This is a very serious act of criminality. We will take very stern action. Nothing can justify this type of violence. We are also at a loss to understand. Teams have been sent out to different areas of the State to round up the culprits."
