New Delhi: In the vote count to elect the next President of India, Pranab Mukherjee outshines PA Sangma as he gets more-than-double support of MPs and MLAs.
Till now Pranab Mukherjee is well ahead in race with 527 votes out of the total 748 votes counted and PA Sangma was able to collect only 206, the other fifteen votes were termed invalid in the counting.
Pranab's 527 votes value at 373116 while that of Sangma's 206 stand at 145848. If we talk of Andhra Pradesh, then Pranab received 182 votes from the state and he needs 525140 votes to win the polls.
How are Presidential Polls worked?
President of India is nominated through the votes of MPs and MLAs. In all, there are 776 MPs* and 4120 MLAs, who cast their vote. MP’s vote equals 708 votes while the value of an MLA’s vote depends on the population of state he/she represents.
Pranab will be the 14th the President of India. He, however be the 13th person as president of India since Dr Rajendra Prasad was elected twice. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will congratulate Pranab at 2pm when he is titled President of India.
