Sonia Gandhi expresses extreme shock over temple stampede deaths

New Delhi: Expressing extreme shock over the 85 deaths in a temple stampede in Madhya Pradesh, Congress chief Sonia Gandhi has condoled the deaths of the victims, stated a statement issued by Congress on Sunday.

“Sonia Gandhi has expressed shock and deep anguish over the tragic incident,” a Congress statement said.

“She has extended her condolences to the families who have lost their loved ones and expressed the hope that the injured are being attended to suitably,” it added.

According to the recent updates, around 85 people have lost their lives in the stampede which occurred today when thousands of devotees had massed at a Durga temple in a forested part of Madhya Pradesh, said the officials.

More than 100 others were injured in the tragedy at the Ratangarh temple in Datia district, 390 km north of this state capital and 55 km from Datia town.

An estimated 2.5 lakh people had gathered all around the Maa Ratangarh Wali temple on the last day of Navratri festival, a police officer said. About 35,000 people were at the site of the tragedy.

The temple is located in a dense forest on the banks of Sindh river. It draws thousands during Navratri, the bulk making it on the last day of the nine-day festival.

However, it is yet to be revealed that how the stampede took place.
