South African top order tops fruitless Aussie quickies
Brisbane: The Australian pace attack didn’t look like that familiar 'fearsome' one expects it to be against the rock-solid South Africans on Friday at the Gabba wicket. The visitors left the hosts disappointed when they finished the day 1 of the first Cricket Test Match at 2/255 with Hashim Amla and Jacques Kallis stamping their authority at the crease.

The spectators who had fallen-in in record numbers, despite it being a non-Ashes Test, were left loathed by the top top-order batting performance by the Proteas. As they had walked in expecting the Aussie pace-men tumbling the furniture of the SA batsman and a bit more chatter from the slip cordon, they were left bemused. All they heard were the sweet sound when the red ball hit the middle of the bat, 'cluck'.

It was a tiring day for the Aussie bowlers who expected a bit more luck going their way than it actually did. The Ben Hilfenhaus led Aussie bowling attack could just scalp two of the SA batsmen in the form of skipper Graeme Smith and Alviro Petersen. While Amla’s typically cultured innings took him to 5000 Test runs earlier than opponent’s great Ricky Ponting.

The South African great, too, on the other side, played in a manner he has been known for over the years. His discipline and power along with the steadiness swung the pendulum towards the tourists. Both Amla and Kallis stamped the Aussie attack with firm authority.

And that, while the two batsmen were going great guns, they survived two threats too. While Kallis was at 43, he miscued his favourite pull to mid-off off Peter Siddle which was comfortably taken. But Asad Rauf went for a no-ball check to confirm whether it was one. The Aussies had already celebrated and Kallis had almost walked out of the field when Asad Rauf called him back as Siddle had stepped a bit more.

Whereas, the stylo Amla was also spared with Siddle being involved in yet another life provider for South Africa as he put a sitter down off his own bowling. Had Siddle not made the two costly mess of the things, the day would have surely ended differently.
