Heavy snowfall closes Srinagar-Jammu highway

Srinagar: The Srinagar-Jammu highway on Monday has been blocked due to heavy snowfall in Kashmir Valley again. The step has been taken so as to avoid life and property loss, as per the officials.

"Two feet deep snow has accumulated on the road in Banihal sector. Although snow clearance operation was started at 5.30 am, the highway has been closed to ensure safety of passengers and vehicles", Brigadier TPS Rawat, chief engineer of Border Roads Organization (BRO), said here.

Snowfall started in Srinagar and other places in the valley on Monday.

"While heavy snowfall is expected in the higher reaches, there would be moderate snowfall in the plains. The same weather conditions are likely to continue on Tuesday. The weather would show signs of improvement from Tuesday afternoon onwards," Sonam Lotus, director of the local MET office, said.

Following poor visibility due to heavy snowfall, no airline could operate any flight to or from the Srinagar international airport.
