Kanpur: Union Coal Minister Sriprakash Jaiswal's statement on President's Rule in Uttar Pradesh has added on some spark in the state politics as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) called it a 'threat to the electorate'.
Speaking in Kanpur, where polling was held for the fifth phase of the assembly polls on Thursday, Jaiswal said, "In that case (if no party wins a majority), we will sit in opposition and the governor will take charge."
Reacting to Jaiswal's statement, BJP leader Kalraj Mishra said in Lucknow that the minister was "threatening the electorate of the state".
"He is misusing his position as a minister," Mishra added.
Jaiswal, however, said he had full confidence in the numbers for the Congress-Rashtriya Lok Dal alliance. "Only those who don't have confidence in their numbers are talking about a post-poll alliance."
Uttar Pradesh is holding seven-phased assembly polls that will end on March 3.
