Tarun Gogoi hints at judicial probe into Bodoland violence

Guwahati: Assam CM Tarun Gogoi on Saturday said a judicial inquiry would be instituted into the recent violence in Kokrajhar, Chirang and Dhubri districts that killed 77 people and displaced over four lakh people.

A Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the violence is already underway. A team visited the violence-affected areas of Kokrajhar Friday.

"We have decided to institute a judicial inquiry regarding the violence in the three districts," Gogoi told reporters.

"To find out the real culprits behind the recent violence, a judicial inquiry is required. The CBI has already started its inquiry and taken up seven special cases," he said.

Gogoi dismissed demands to dissolve the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC), which runs the administration in four Bodoland Territorial Areas Districts (BTAD).

"A section of people have been trying to project that there were more killings in areas under the BTC after its creation. But actually after the creation of the BTC in 2003, the violence came down in the areas under the council," said Gogoi.

He assured the violence-affected people their rehabilitation and said 1.6 lakh people had already left relief camps and 100 relief camps have been closed down.
