The Amazing Spider-Man earns INR 34 crore in opening weekend

Mumbai: Shattering box office record of the Hollywood movies in India, The Amazing Spider-Man has earned nearly INR 34 crore in its opening weekend.

Directed by Marc Webb and based on the Marvel Comics superhero, The Amazing Spider-Man released on June 29, with over 1000 prints, the largest ever release for a Hollywood film in the country.

The movie released in 3D, 2D and IMAX formats and in four languages-English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu.

Gautam Dutta, chief executive PVR Ltd said that Friday being a working day the occupancy was average. However, the occupancy improved on Saturday and Sunday, running almost house-full.

According to the theatre executives, the 3D cinema screens are packed. In cities where there are both 3D and 2D screens, the occupancy for 3D shows more than 80 percent while in 2D it is relatively lower.

The movie is in a great demand in small towns where there are only 2D screens or fewer numbers of 3D screens, as per Girish Wankhede, spokesperson for Cinemax India Ltd.

Reports reveal that the ticket prices are INR 250-350 each for the 3D shows and INR 200 on average at 2D screens.

As per the reports, The Amazing Spider-Man has defeated Mission Impossible-4: Ghost Protocol which collected around INR 24 crore in India, James Camerons 2009 film Avatar earned around INR 22 crore in its first weekend and The Avengers around INR 18 crore.

The Amazing Spider-Man stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans, Denis Leary, Campbell Scott, Irrfan Khan, with Martin Sheen and Sally Field.
