A realtime GTA of test-drive vehicle

Amritsar: A young man in Amritsar drove away INR 15 lakh vehicle in perfect Hollywood style when offered a test drive. He was escorted with a sales man, but it took him no time to dodge the executive and run away.

Inder Pal Singh, General Manager in a Toyota showroom said, "On Thursday at around 2 pm, a smartly-dressed man probably 20-22 years of age visited our showroom. He told us that he wanted to buy a Toyota Corolla Altis car, which retails at INR 15.5 lakh."

He also said that the man had excellent communication skills and introduced himself as Harmeet Singh. He discussed the car features in detail for about half an hour with the sales man.

Harmeet then asked for a test drive, so he was assigned salesman Kanwalpreet Singh to accompany him. Singh, the complainant in the case said, "Then the suspect drove the car to Ranjit Avenue and asked the salesman to ring the doorbell of a flat to call his father as he wanted to surprise his family. As soon as Kanwalpreet stepped out of the vehicle, the accused sped away with the car."

The fraudster's driving licence number, mobile number and address were noted as a precautionary measure, but they all turned out to be fake.

"After the incident, we spoke to other car dealers. We found that the man had visited their showrooms too, but he was not given a test-drive," said Singh.

The Sultanwind Police station has registered a complaint against the fraud under sections 420 for cheating and dishonesty and 379 for theft.

Amritsar police commissioner Ram Singh said, "A case has been registered. We are working on the case. This seems to be a new modus operandi of vehicle thieves. I have directed auto dealers to be very cautious before handing over car keys for a test-drive."

He also said that the dealers must verify the documents before handling the vehicle to the prospective client.
