Assam Attack: 13 dead during gunfire by militants in Kokrajhar

Guwahati: On Friday, a group of militants opened fire at a market area near Kokrajhar, Assam killing nearly 13 people. As per reports, the militants who disappeared after the attack, shot civilians at the Balazan Market and also hurled grenades.

The attack has not been claimed by any of the terror outfits and initial reports suggest that it was carried out by the members of the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB-S). The NDFB (S) is a separatist outfit and is led by IK Songbijit who want to obtain Bodoland for the Bodo people of Assam.

As of now, the Army together with the paramilitary forces has called for a manhunt to nab the attackers. Till now, there is no confirmation on the exact number of terrorists who carried out the attack.

Home Minister Rajnath Singh and Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar have been briefed about the attack by Chief Minister Sarbabanda Sonowal. The situation is now being closely monitored by the Ministry of Home Affairs.

On the other hand, Deputy CM Kiren Rijiju said that efforts are being made to restore peace in the area.
