Breaking: Raj Babbar appointed as the Congress UP chief

Lucknow:Bollywood actor turned politician Raj Babbar was today appointed as the Chief of Congress in Uttar Pradesh. The announcement was made formally by the party today evening.

Babbar started his political career by joining Janata Dal in 1989, which was led by V. P. Singh.

He later joined Samajwadi Party and was elected as the Member of Indian Parliament for three times. From 1994 to 1999 he was a member of Rajya Sabha.

He was re-elected in the 14th Lok Sabha elections for the second term in 2004. Babbar was suspended from Samajwadi Party in 2006.

After getting suspended from SP, he joined Indian National Congress in 2008 and was elected for fourth term as Member of Parliament in 2009, by defeating Dimple Yadav wife of Akhilesh Yadav and daughter-in-law of Mulayam Singh Yadav.

During 2014 Lok Sabha elections, he lost to General V K Singh where he contested from Ghaziabad.

Babbar was declared elected unobstructed to Rajya Sabha from the alone vacant Upper House seat from Uttarakhand in 2015.
