SEOUL: Chief of Samsung Group, Jay Y. Lee was today arrested in relation to his alleged involvement in a corruption scandal in South Korea.
Samsung is at present the world’s biggest maker of smartphones and memory chips and the arrest will surely affect the business perspective as well.
According to the information given by the jail official, Lee was taken into custody at the Seoul Detention Centre following his wait there overnight for the decision and was kept in a single cell that had a TV and desk.
Lee is a suspect in the influence-peddling scandal that led parliament to impeach President Park Geun-hye in December, a decision that if upheld by the Constitutional Court would make her the country’s first democratically elected leader forced from office.
Samsung Group spokeswoman further mentioned that no decision had been taken until now on whether Lee’s arrest would be contested or whether bail would be sought.
