Childhood obesity may lead to life-long morbidity

According to the information given through a new research, obesity in childhood may lead to hip disease, a condition that may lead to life-long morbidity. Slipped Capital Femoral Epiphysis (SCFE) is the most common hip disease of adolescence. This condition further requires surgery to get relive from pain and may lead to hip replacement.

One of the study authors Daniel Perry from the Institute of Translational Medicine said: “Ultimately this study helps us to better understand one of the main diseases affecting the hip in childhood.”

Children suffering with SCFE experience a decrease in their range of motion and are often unable to complete hip flexion. Recognition of this disease at early age is important as the deformity may worsen if the slip remains untreated.

This disease is common among children under age of 16 suffering from obesity.
