Panaji: Goa opposition lawmaker Naresh Sawal attracted controversy after he said that hands of those who face corruption charges should be chopped off. This statement was made by the independent MLA from Bicholim in the Goa Assembly.
He had said, “If the government is serious about acting against corruption, then they should cut off the hands of those who are corrupt.”
Along with this he accused the BJP-led coalition government here of working quite slowly towards reducing corruption.
Attacking Sawal over his statement, Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar asked him to think before making any such statement.
Parsekar said, “It looks like the MLA has come with his sword unsheathed. This is a democracy and in a democracy, even if a person is known as an established criminal or a cheat, it has to proven so.”
He added, “You cannot cut off the hands of thieves. This is a democracy. He should realize that.”
