Mumbai: The most beautiful, stunning and the reigning queen of Bollywood, Rekha is celebrating her 63rd birthday on Tuesday.
Bhanurekha Ganesan, popularly known as Rekha, is a daughter of Tamil actor Gemini Ganeshan and Telugu actress Pushpavalli. She made her acting debut at the age of 12 with Telugu film ‘Rangula Ratnam'(1966).

The seductive actress entered Bollywood in 1969 and worked in the movie ‘Anjana Safar’ (later titled Do Shikari). She bagged her first role as lead actress in ‘Sawan Bhado’ (1970) opposite Navin Nischol and the film was a big hit and Rekha became a star overnight.
Despite of her success, Rekha had to struggle in her initial years in the tinsel town. She had trouble with the language and was also criticized for her dark complexion.
Later, the actress completely reinvented her image and never looked back.
Rekha’s breakthrough came in 1976 with ‘Do Anjaane’ in which she shared the shared the screen space with Big B Amitabh Bachchan. She earned applauds for her fantabulous performance in the flick.
In 1978, her power-packed performance in ‘Ghar’ earned a nomination for Best Actress at the Filmfare Awards, her very first.
Rekha cemented her space in Bollywood by giving back-to-back hits in ‘Khubsoorat’, ‘Muqaddar Ka Sikander’, ‘Silsila’, ‘Umrao’ ‘Jaan’, ‘Kalyug’, ‘Vijeta’, ‘Utsav’, ‘Ijaazat’ and ‘Khoon Bhari Maang’.
She won National Film Award in 1981 for ‘Umrao Jaan’.
Rekha’s career witnessed a downfall in the 1990s when she started losing lead roles to younger actresses. But the eternal beauty made a comeback with Mira Nair’s Kama Sutra in 1996 and ‘Khiladiyon Ka Khiladi’ opposite Akshay Kumar.
‘Khiladiyon Ka Khiladi’ was a major grosser and Rekha bagged several awards for that, including the best supporting actress award and the star screen award for best villain.
She also appeared in films like ‘Lajja’, ‘Zubeidaa’, ‘Dil Hai Tumhara’, ‘Koi Mil Gaya’, ‘Parineeta’ and ‘Krrish’.
She was also honoured with the prestigious Padma Shri Award for her contribution to Indian cinema.
The actress had a very bad experience in her love life. In 1990 she married Delhi-based businessman Mukesh Aggarwal and her marriage did not last long. Aggarwal committed a suicide a year later and their love life ended on a sad note.
