Gold Man Datta Phuge beaten to death; used to wear shirt worth 1.2 cr

Pune: On Friday, a 48-year-old business man from Pune who was in news for buying a gold shirt worth Rs 1 crore few years back, was beaten to death in front of his son.

The deceased, Datta Phuge, a businessman from the industrial township of Pimpri-Chinchwad in the district came into limelight after he gifted himself a 3.5 kg gold shirt worth Rs 1.27 crore in 2012. He was attacked by as many as 12 people in an open ground in Dighi area at 11:30 pm yesterday with stones and a sharp weapon which resulted in killing of Phuge on spot.

Dighi police station inspector Navnath Ghogare said, “As per preliminary information, Phuge and his son were invited by one of the suspects, who know each other, to celebrate a birthday. However, we are investigating how Phuge reached the open ground where he was murdered.” He added that the 22-year-old son of Phuge who reached the spot on getting a similar birthday invite saw the attackers killing his father; however he was spared by them.

Phuge used to lend money and was into chit fund business. Police suspect that he couple have been killed following some dispute over money.

As of now, 4 persons have been detained.
