Hurricane Matthew mauls Haiti and Cuba with torrential rains, kills 17

Port-au-Prince/Santo Domingo: As many as 17 people were killed while several others faced severe problems as Hurricane Matthew moved toward the Bahamas and Florida’s eastern coast and mauled Haiti and Cuba with torrential rains.

Haiti’s electoral council postponed Sunday’s presidential election keeping in mind the problems caused by the storm.

The hurricane lashed Cuba and Haiti with 230 km per hour winds on Tuesday and has been confirmed as the “the worst humanitarian crisis to hit Haiti since the 2010 earthquake” by the UN officials.

The president of Haiti’s Provisional Electoral Council, Leopold Berlanger, said a new date for the presidential elections would be announced by next Wednesday at the latest after talks between various interested parties.
