Kanpur Dalit Youth Killing: 14 police officials suspended; booked for murder

Kanpur: The police seem to go down too harsh while handling a case as in yet another incident, a Dalit youth was found hanging inside a police station in Kanpur. Death of the 25-year-old Kamal Valmiki has led to massive protests in the area.

As per reports, Kamal who was brought for interrogation two days back in a case of theft in the area was found hanging inside the Ahirwan police station. In this case, UP government has suspended 14 policemen and has also registered a murder case against them.

Members of the Kamal’s family said that they were informed that he committed suicide; however they have alleged that he has been killed and was also tortured inside police custody. Also, they said that the police sent the body for post mortem under a wrong name. As of now, the post-mortem report is awaited.

On the other hand, the police in its statement said that it was a case of mistaken identity.

Kanpur SSP, Shalabh Mathur said, “The family has said that a constable had taken Valmiki for questioning and then this incident took place. On basis of their complaint, we have registered a case of murder and the entire police chowki has been suspended. If other police personnel are involved we will act against them too.”

State Police chief Javed Ahmed said, “Death in police custody is a very serious offence and we will spare no one in this case.”

There were clashes between the Kamal Valmiki’s relatives, locals and the police. The protests followed locals pelting at the police officials and also vandalizing number of vehicles.
