Maternity leave bill passed by Rajya Sabha

New Delhi: The members of Rajya Sabha today passed bill to increase the maternity leave from present 12 weeks to 26 weeks.

The maternity bill provides leaves of 26 weeks to woman having two existing children and the adopting mothers which includes payment during that period.

The Maternity bill does not include surrogates mother because several opposition members objected about this option.

The opposition leaders sought Labour Minister Bandaru Dattatreya’s assurance that the government will examine it and take action.

The bill will now go to Lok Sabha which will lead to the ratification of International Labour Organization convention number 183 that provides for 14 weeks of maternity benefit to women.

The bill also make possible ‘work from home’ for nursing mothers once they leave period ends and has made creche facility mandatory in respect of establishments with 50 or more employees.
