Newly-wed woman killed for not giving new notes as dowry

Bhubaneswar: In a shocking incident a newly-married woman was today killed by her in-laws after her father failed to give new currency notes as dowry of worth Rs 1.70 lakh in Odisha’s Ganjam district.

According to police officials, the victim woman was identified as Prabhati from Rangipur village got married to Laxmi Nahak of the same village a day after the government has announced demonetization of currency notes on November 8th.

The father of the deceased victim told media persons that he agreed to give Rs 1.70 lakh as dowry in cash. But on the day of marriage when her father offered dowry money in the form of demonetized notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes.

The groom family members refused to take the money as amount turned only piece of papers after demonetisation and instead they demanded new currency notes.

Parents of Prabhati said that her in-laws killed her daughter on Sunday after they failed to provide new currency notes as dowry.

Police said that the mother of victim Kunu Mandal said, “Her son-in-law along with his family killed our daughter just because we were unable to provide the news notes, so I want them to be punished.”

The head of the Golanthara police station, inspector Alok Jena said, a case of dowry death has been registered.
