Old currency of Rupees 500 notes will turn invalid from today midnight

NEW DELHI: Today is the last day when the people can use the old currency of 500 rupee notes as the Centre has not extended the deadline of December 15 to use old 500 rupee notes for some of the activities like paying utility and hospital bills and buying cooking gas cylinders.

Economic affairs secretary Shaktikanta Das tweeted: “Exemptions for use of old Rs 500 notes will end on 15 Dec midnight.”

Earlier, provision to use old Rs 500 notes at petrol pumps was withdrawn by the Centre from the December 2 midnight.

Usage of old note had been stopped earlier subsequent to the decision taken following an assessment that the exemption was being hideously misused to make legal black money and that scrapping it will not affect movement of goods.

Central government had permitted the use of old currency of Rs 500 notes for a series of activities up to December 15 midnight that comprised of the payments in government hospitals for treatment.
