PV Sindhu, Sakshi Malik, Dipa, Jitu Rai bestowed with Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award

New Delhi: Indian sportsmen, especially the women- badminton player PV Sindhu, wrestler Sakshi Malik and Gymnast Dipa Karmakar who made in big in the Rio Olympics were conferred with the prestigious Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award today by President Pranabh Mukherjee. Renowned shooter Jitu Rai too won accolades for the same.

Sindhu being the first Indian woman to have won silver at the Olympics received the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award from the President of India at the Rashtrapati Bhawan. Apart from Sindhu, Sakhi too was conferred for being the first Indian wrestler to have won a bronze at the prestigious games.

Dipa and Jitu also received an award for their excellent performance in the games.

Apart from them, the Ministry is also giving away the Arjuna Awards to the 15 short listed athletes which includes boxer Shiva Thapa, long distance runner Lalita Babar, cricketer Ajinkya Rahane, hockey players VR Raghunath and Rani Rampal among others.

Six coaches, one of them being Raj Kumar Sharma who trained Indian team’s Test skipper Virat Kohli were also conferred with the Dronacharya Award this year.
