Skipper Ritu Rani dropped from Indian hockey team

New Delhi: In a major change in Indian women’s hockey team who is about to leave for Rio Olympics, the veteran midfielder and longtime skipper Ritu Rani was dropped from the squad and in her place Sushila Chanu named as the new captain.

The Hockey India (HI) official said that as an important member of the national team over the years Ritu has been named to lead the team to their first Olympics qualification in 36 years.

But she left the national camp last week following allegations of poor performance and attitude problems from (HI), the official added.

The HI on Tuesday announced Deepika as vice captain among the 16 members team for Rio Olympics.

Shushila who replaced Ritu had captained the Indian Hockey team during her absence from her Australia tour.

Chanu made her debut in Indian team in the year 2006 and has notched up213 international caps.
