Sunil Gavaskar questions Ashish Nehra’s selection in Indian team

New Delhi: Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar, who is disappointed with the selection of Ashish Nehra in the T20I series against New Zealand, said that the selections are based not on emotions but simply merit.

Ashish Nehra announced his retirement from international cricket a few days ago, saying that the T201against New Zealand on November 1 at Delhi’s Ferozeshah Kotla will be his last match.

Left-arm pacer Nehra was selected for the three-match T20I series against Australia but wasn’t selected for the first two matches while the third was washed out.

Gavaskar questioned the Indian Cricket team selectors that how Nehra will find a place in the XI in Delhi when he was not picked for either match in the last series.

“Ashish Nehra announcing his retirement also makes a bit of an issue, for with him not being selected for the first two games, how are the selectors going to pick him in the playing XI in the first T20 match of the new series against New Zealand?” questioned Gavaskar.

“Selections are not done on emotion but simply on merit. Nehra deserved to play against the Aussies but wasn’t picked and Bhuvneshwar (Kumar) and (Jasprit) Bumrah can’t be dropped, so how will Nehra be given the farewell he deserves? That will be interesting to see,” he added.

On the other hand, Gavaskar also demanded for cricket venues in India to be made available with covers long enough to be spread across the entire field.
