US urged nations to back India for NSG membership

Washington: The United States (US) said on Tuesday that it will continue to urge countries to back India’s bid for Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) membership in the elite 48-members group at the plenary session in Seoul this week.

Interestingly, on the other hand India’s one of border sharing country China has always appose India’s entry into the group.

Answering a query regarding China’s attitude on India’s membership, the US State Department spokesperson John Kirby said, the US repeats that India was ready for membership to the Nuclear Suppliers Group.

“We continue to call on the participating governments of the NSG to support India’s application at the plenary session in Seoul, Kirby said.”

He further said, that the US President Barack Obama after meeting with the Prime Minister Naredra Modi in Washington this month welcomed India’s application to join the NSG and reaffirmed that India is ready for membership.

He added that “And nothing is changed about our position”.
