Uttar Pradesh jails are overcowded

UP prisons are quite overcrowded. You would be surprised to know that they are holding 60 per cent more than the permissible capacity of inmates.

In an RTI response, officials have said that there were around 93,301 persons in UP jails, with capacity (official one) only being 58,111.

Overcrowding is quite a factor in Indian jails with the Supreme Court already labeling the whole situation as pathetic.

As per the details given by Akhtar Riaz, Additional IG (Administration) Jails, there are 70 jails in UP of which five are central jails.

These jails have the capacity of 58,111 persons,  for men it is 51,839, 2,956 for women and 3,316 juvenile prisoners.

What is making situation so desperate is the the number of undertrials that is around 2.4 times the number of convicts.

In the last two years or so, UP prisons have reported cases of riots violence.
